13930 Aureille - a gem

Aureille offers all the necessary facilities for basic grocery shopping, with a good bakery, a butcher, a grocery shop, and a “tabacs-journaux”. A Crédit Agricole branch and La Poste are also available (but don’t count on them for foreign exchange). The closes supermarket is the Intermarché in Eyguières (follow “Salon”). The next big facility is the Géant Casino in Salon (on the N113 Salon-Ouest). There are also some shops including Pharmacy in Mouriès (also the closest but expensive gas station), and in Maussane. Don’t forget that most shops are closed from 12h30 thru 15h30.

In Aureille, you will find two tennis courts, a «boulodrome» a (bull-fighting) arena, a football field, the Bar Soler. In Mouriès, you have the Golf de Servanes. Close by, there are many horse riding organisers.

If you like hiking, we recommend you climb the Tour d’Opiès, highest peak of the Alpilles, where the old fire observation shed still stands. Itineraries (hardly marked) start either by the North oratory, 200m on the road towards Eygalières, or behind the cemetery near the Castle. It’s about 3hrs15 for a return journey. With clear weather, the view is amazing. For the less daring, climb to the «castellas», a ruined Medival fort, symbol of the village.

In the region, there are a lot of good restaurants. We recommend La Voûte in the centre of Aureille. The Sartan is good, but the service can sometimes be a bit slow. You can try Lou Menut in Eyguières. Our best discovery during the last two years : Le Planet in Grans, tel. 0490558366. Somewhat more expensive, but excellent quality. In Fontvieille, there are several restaurants of all categories. St-Rémy offers a large choice. Arles is disappointing. In Maussanne and Eygalières, the restaurants have become expensive.

In Salon, the closest «town», you will also find a McDonald’s next to the cinemas (combined meal/ticket price) “Bistrots” : Le Commerce in St-Rémy et Le Provence in Mouriès!

Mostly during summer, there are a lot of events and activities like the bull races - even in Aureille -, open air concerts, and the amazing open-air markets, the most interesting are probably in St-Rémy and Uzès (close to Pont du Gard). There is an important Antique market in Isle sur la Sorgue.
